Herzing University-ABSN..advice?

I am currently considering ABSN program at Herzing University- Orlando campus. Are there any nursing students here who are currently attending Herzing or have attended in the past? I am concerned with the following:

  • Their NCLEX passing rates are lower than the national average. I visited their campus recently and was told that they provide ATI training to their students.
  • Accreditation- they are accredited by Florida Board of Nursing and CCNE however, they do not have accreditation from SACS. Should I be concerned? I do plan on pursuing MSN after completion.
  • Reputation- I have read a lot of negative reviews about the school online. Does the school actually care about their students?
  • Education- how are the professors and teaching method? Are they preparing students for NCLEX or is it all Self Learn?
  • Few things that I did like is that the semester is rotating every 8 weeks, therefore, you only take 2 classes at a time. Students don't feel cramped with classes. Also, ABSN students have the option to transfer to Traditional BSN program.

A little background story about me: I have BS degree from another university. Late last year, I attended ECPI University's ABSN program..however, due to the intensity of the first quarter, I failed 2 classes. Per school policy, I was not able to stay and continue. Hence why I am considering looking at other programs. It is unfortunate however, I am gathering the courage to get back up and try it one more time to pursue my passion.

I apologize, as I am not able to provide you any useful information pertaining to Herzing's ASBN program, as I am also looking for information. I am currently considering both Herzing and ECPI. ECPI was looking better to me to due the shorter time frame for completion. I was hoping you may be able to give me insight on ECPI's program (pros & cons; anything that may be useful). Do you feel that you could succeed in that program if you were given another opportunity to attend and were better prepared the next time around?

Sorry for the delayed response. Go for a ECPI college tour and ask if you can sit in one of the classes. ECPI was not so great experience for me, as I was starting school after a long time. The first quarter is SUPER intense, you are basically in classes 5 days a week from 8- 5pm (think of it as full time job) towards the end of the quarter there are 4 weeks of hospital rotation (either Fri or Sat). The faculty who teaches the courses are grandfathered in from Remington College so their teaching methods are old school. In fact, when I attended one of the faculty resigned before the finals so we were pretty much on our own before the Finals. The faculty also read off the powerpoints alot and the days they dont want to teach, there are group activities in which I personally never learned anything.

There is also a HUGE communication gap between the faculty and students. For example, for the rotation sites, in the beginning of the quarters, the students were told that it will be a lottery system however that did not happen. It didnt effect me as much but for students who have children etc. it didnt go so well. If I were given another oppurtunity, I would have definitely changed a few things and be prepared. Having good family support system is needed for this program. Overall, it all depends on each individual to be successful. Everyone comes from different path in life, but if you are ready to give it all then it is worth it at the end. I found Herzing to have more resources available for students then ECPI. I started the ABSN program at Herzing this Summer, so far I have no regrets.

Thank you for all of that information, I greatly appreciated. In reference to the hospital rotations at the end of the quarter, you mentioned that they were either Friday or Saturday. Does that mean that you were in class Mon-Thurs of those weeks? Also, were there breaks in between quarters/semesters?

Yes, during the rotations, you are still in class Mon-Thurs. Depending on when you start, there are major holiday breaks, however it is all dependent on staff and the college dean's discretion.
