Florida International University (FIU) CRNA Spring 2022 start

Published

Hi!

Couldn't find a thread for Spring 2022 so I figured I'd start it. Anyone applying to FIU CRNA program to start Spring 2022 cohort?

Hello everyone!

I've been following these threads lately as a SRNA hopeful one day?. I have 2 semesters left of my ASN and then 3 more to finish off my BSN thereafter (in other words a baby nursing student!) I currently work per diem in an ICU/PCU floor ,hoping to get hired there once I pass my NCLEX. My current GPA is a 3.48 although I know I have more than enough time to raise my GPA with 5 semesters left. I am aware of the experience needed, as well as the CCRN certification, but is there any advice anyone can give me at this point in my journey? Did you guys take extra Chemistry courses to boost your applications? What type of ICU experience is considered the most competitive? Anyways, I don't want to make this longer than I already have, I'll be lucky to even get one reply back LOL? Hope all of you the very best of luck, rooting for all of you! ?

Hi FutureMurse,

As far as most competitive ICU, IMO, would be CVICU and/or CCU at a level 1 hospital. Any ICU at a level 1 would likely give you a wider range of experiences than the same ICU at lower level hospitals. If you're not at a level 1 hospital, try to work in the largest hospital in your area because, at least in my area, the more complex cases get transferred to the main hospital as the smaller ones tend not to offer all services. I started in a smaller hospital in MICU (20 beds) and transferred to CVICU (12 beds) at a level 1 for the opportunity to get more experience with things like swan-ganz catheters, balloon pumps, etc.

I didn't take extra science courses but I got As in all of mine. I would say get involved in committees on your unit, eventually precept incoming nurses, and volunteer. I didn't do any of that but I wish I was more proactive at least with the volunteering. If I'm not accepted this year, I will focus on those types of things and maybe even get an additional certification.

Best of luck to you

Wow thanks for all this info! My current ICU floor is not in a major level 1 hospital but rather a smaller hospital (one of the better hospital systems down here though). My plan is to work there after graduation & then transfer to a larger hospital with a trauma center. My biggest worry apart from admissions, is the financial aspect of it (tuition and not being able to work for three years). I figure with some planning and some loans anything is possible though haha. Anyways, thanks once again and best of luck to you as well, you got this!?

Anyone else hopeful that they are still calling for interviews? LOL

I’d say if they didn’t send a rejection email then you are still in the game ?

I called last week and they’re reviewing applications still throughout this week.

Any current FIU SRNAs on this page? Would appreciate any interview advice or tips if yall are willing to offer them up.

Same!! I literally just got the email!! Everyone says they’ve been taking a minute to get back about our interview time so hopefully we hear back sooner rather than later??
