Florida Hospital Weekender

:urgycld:Hey ya'll, new to allnurses, I'm in Virginia trying to get out!!!! My husband's job closed a year ago

and he hasn't been able to find work yet. This month his unemployment cut off. I am the sole provider for a family of seven and had been working the weekend plan for HCA for three years. I recently took a job at the Veterans Hospital for the Cardiac Surg. experience but we are now unable to survive with the pay cut (no weekend option at the VA). We have been wanting to move further south for years and Florida Hospital looks like they do their fair share of cardiac surg. and they have "weekend positions" listed. Any advice on the pay rate for that? Thanks.

When you consider moving to FL, you must take a lot into consideration. On the positive, no state income tax, low license plate renewal fees, lower cost of living than VA, warm climate are just a few. On the down side.....low pay by comparison to what you have been earning. Even as housing costs jumped, FL pay rates were low. Pathetic HS graduation rates (ie: 50% depending on where you live). (Also understand that if you are very involved in your kids educations, they are self motivated, good students with no ESE issues, they CAN and will succeed in FL schools.)

Honestly, if I were willing to relocate from VA, I would look at Dallas first. TX is hiring. Pay is good. Low cost of living. Reasonable housing costs. Extremely low crime rate in the suburbs like Richardson and Plano. Great schools. Warm climate. No state income tax. The downside....traffic, but if you live in VA, you may already deal with that issue!

I can't give you accurate nursing pay information down here.....I am still a student. :nurse:
