Float Pool

Hey;

I'm a CNA and I was wondering if it's a good idea to apply for a float pool position at a rather large hospital. I don't have any hospital experience, so I thought it might be better to try for a position in a specific unit first. For those of you in the know, would you say a float position is more challenging? Would you mind listing some positives/negatives of such a position? Finally, would you recommend applying for it or not? Thank you SO much for any and all feedback!

I don't work float, but I've considered it because the job is ever changing, and you really don't get into the floor politics.

I agree with Casi. You definitely don't get into the floor politics, which will keep you more sane. The only downside I can think of is that you are going from unit to unit, and it becomes hard to know what the nurses and other aides are expected to do and expect from themselves. It will take you sometime to know which floor does vitals at the beginning of shift or the end, stuff like that. But at the same time, you get to experience different units and see new things.

I started out that way and I thought it was a GREAT way to get to know what I wanted to do. I thought I would want to do Ortho or Neuro...and it ended up being that I really loved Med/Surg and Critical Care...I have been in Critical Care now for 9 years, and without float pool I would have never known!

It is hard to float from floor to floor, not knowing who you're working with and finding what you need, what is expected of you...but YES, you definitely do avoid all teh drama! lol

Good luck to you! I really liked it...can't hurt to try it out!
