FLmomof5 MSN ?

Published

Hi FLmom,

I'm also a FLmom, just have one less child than you! I noticed your reply on the thread "how long did it take you to get into nursing school" I also have a bachelor's degree in Elem. Ed (guessing that this is what your EE meant) and I'm hoping to start the nursing program at Edison State College in May of this year. I'm thinking ahead about further education and wondered what you know about going on to get a Master's. Are you in a BSN program right now or an ADN? My program is ADN and I was assuming that I'd have to get my BSN before going for my Master's. Edison doesn't offer a Master's Program but it does offer the BSN, but only after you complete the ADN. I'm curious about going straight for my MSN and that sounds to me like what you are planning on doing. Any information you could share would be helpful :)

Thanks!

Actually, my EE stands for Electrical Engineering! :D

I am currently a mainframe programmer. Regardless of the crap the government tells the country, our programming jobs are regularly shipped overseas so the career field is very unstable. I get laid off on the average of every 2 - 3 yrs.

I first looked at what I could study for the shortest period of time for the greatest reward (monetarily). My current pay is $37.00 per hour so you can imagine the cut in pay I will face taking that first RN job!

I am in an ADN program at FSCJ. I will graduate in August 2010. :nurse::yeah:

Since I already have a Bachelors (as do you) I began looking into RN to MSN programs so that I could become a NP. There is a program at UNF I was looking into as well as an online program offered by USA (Univ of So Ala). If you look at UNF as an example, here is what you need:

  • Two years experience as a Registered Nurse in a clinical setting (resume 1-2 pages in length that includes professional work experience with a brief explanation of each position's responsibilities)
  • Minimum score of 1000 on the GRE (combined verbal and quantitative sections); score of at least 3 out of 5 on GRE written sample test
  • Minimum overall GPA of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale and a "C" or better in each undergraduate nursing prerequisite course (see below)
  • Completion of university foreign language requirement
  • Written statement of academic and professional goals (typewritten in no smaller than 12pt font or equivalent with 1" margins (all sides), not to exceed 3 pages)
  • Current Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Florida (copy of actual RN license)
  • Academic and clinical references (one each)

HUN2201 wasn't offered at FSCJ during my "wait semester" (the semester after you applied and before you start). I did take STA2014 and got an A.

USA has an RN-MSN program specifically designed for those why have a Bachelors in a non-Nursing degree:

Good luck to you in your new career choice!!!

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks for the thorough reply!! I'm laughing about my assumption on Elementary Ed :)

I will check into the U. of South AL for the online MSN. If their course requirements are similar to UNF then I have all but the Chem and Nutrition. My Intro Semester to the ADN program that begins in May is only 3 credit hours so I'll probably take one of these classes too. UNF is out of the question because my husband refuses to move any farther North!!

Thanks again! Hope you are enjoying Nursing School! I am so excited to begin my journey :)

No problem! :D

I love nursing school! This term is OB and Peds and I am seriously looking forward to this rotation! I loved ER, but @ 47, I have to seriously consider whether I have the stamina to keep up with that level of effort. (I am fit, but, alas, aging does take a toll!)

I am also seriously considering the USoAla route because it is all online and that would be far more workable than having to sit in a classroom all the time. LOL!

Stay in touch and let me know how it goes! :nurse:
