Flight nursing in Birmingham???

Published

What does anyone know about doing this in Birmingham? What are the opportunities, qualifications etc?

Specializes in EMS ( Just got in to Nursing school).

Before I moved to Ohio, the only flight nursing job in the B-ham area was with Lifesaver. They used to have a site, but it's not up right now. Just search Alabama lifesaver operated by Omniflight, this should get you started. Air-evac is in some of the areas around Alabama and Huntsville has a service called Medflight (I think). Like I said this was a couple years ago so things may have changed by now. Good luck.

Specializes in ICU, Mother/Baby.

I found out today that yoou need one year experience as a nurse before you can do this.

Specializes in Critical Care.

UAB has a Critical Care Transport team, but it is very hard to get a job with them. You might could get a foot in the door as a part time employee, but I wouldn't expect any full time jobs to open up any time soon. You do have to have at least one year of critical care experience, first, though.

do you have to be a BSN RN to work at UAB?

I have had no luck getting a recruiter to call me back. I just want to ask questions. I am trying to decide between 2nd degree BSN and just doing ADN RN at Jeff State (which is faster and more affordable). Of course the school advisers push there programs!

If you are still intrested Lifesaver in Birmingham does hire RN's but you do have to have 1 years exp. Childrens hopital also has care flight which flies with RN's but you have to have the experience. All of your flight positions are going to require at least 1 year critical care experience.

Thanks for the info..YES I am interested, but need to finish nursing school and get a job first!

I was a Flight Attendant for many years. Actually dealt with some medical emergencies there and did some minor transport. ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT and I LOVE flying. So you can see the interest!
