My preceptor ...

Is just odd, and I need to vent.

She is a funny gal, likes to sit a lot at the nursing station and joke with her buddies. I laugh a lot, but I also struggle with her.

None of her joking is directed at me. She does her joking thing, then turns to me and tells me to go do something, or just says something sort of crappy.

She has me up to about 3 patients now. Granted, she leaves me alone and doesn't constantly nitpick at all -- guess I should be glad about that, but she doesn't exactly teach anything either.

Lately she was getting so short and rude with me I had to ask her to stop, and asked her if I was annoying her or what -- she responded and said, No, absolutely not, sweetie -- it's not you.

But that was it -- and so why is it then that she is so short and condescending? I am a 2nd degree nurse and I'm a bit older, but she and I are the same age. I doubt age is any issue.

The staff as assigned a general preceptor that will mentor all the new grads on the floor, and she is fantastic, but she can't be everywhere and we are generally supposed to still go to our main preceptor for help

Anyway, just am getting so tired of her snarky comments, especially when I ask her a question. All I fricking want is a straight answer and then to get on with my day - why is tha so hard? ?

I honestly don't know why people like this precept at all. :uhoh3:

I can relate--I am done with my "preceptor" now and am technically on my own....but I still require alot of help. FYI I am a hard worker, I know I need some extra help, that is why I will get other nurses call lights and do thier acu checks while I am doing mine. I kind of feel like "Ok I know you have to take some extra time and help me --so in turn I am going to try and do some of your grunt work so you have that extra time"

Well last night..I had a Sr nurse, who has been a nurse for maybe 40 years..huge wealth of knowledge and I truely enjoy when I get to work with her..anyways...she is retired and only works part time PRN. So last night she said to me. Me the new grad- " I am sick of all the new in exp grads we have working now, we are losing well seasoned nurses and ending up with an elementary staff." Our M/S floor has 2 new grads and have hired a new nurse tech who will be graduating in May.

FYI the newest nurse in my unit besides me has been there 6 years!!!!!

So I said to her "who exactly are we losing?" her response, a 65 year old nurse who retired last year!!!!

Shoot, those nurses have to retire sometime ... does she expect them to be nurses in their 80's? LOL.

Most of the staff management we have have worked on our floors about 7-8 years or less. Guess they must be relatively inexperienced also.
