Any good books to read while unemployed......

Nurses New Nurse

Published

Well I have 8 months of experience on a Med/surg floor. I have been looking for work for 5 months and no luck :( I was going to re-read my med/surg book but I was wondering if there are any recommendations out there? I am looking for something that will help with transition to practice, being a new nurse, or even a good review book.....

Any suggestions?? Thanks in advance.

It's hard to stick to a schedule of study on your own. I'm using two NCLEX prep books for review while job searching. One had a DVD with practice tests and self-assessments. With the self-assessment, I was able to print out a study schedule targeting my weak areas and covering related chapters. Another text from my schooling has DVD's with videos of nursing skills and skills checklists to print out. I have all the orientation materials from my first hospital orientation. Other planned activities include taking some certifications trainings (ACLS, Pals, Basic Heart Rhythms, Emergency Pharmacology, etc.) Most of these can be partially completed online. Some are very affordable. If you join one of the nursing professional organizations, you'll receive journals. These have good articles and CEU offerings. Many of these are free. In short, there are endless choices to keep abreast of new nursing knowledge and to keep knowledge and skills fresh. I intend to keep track of these activities as an addendum to my resume, to show what I've been doing while not working as an RN. I plan to volunteer as soon as I can get signed up, to keep involved in nursing related work while job searching. I was able to land a non-nursing, medical-related job that involves short-term assignments retrieving medical records. This has given me familiarity with many types of EMR systems, flash drives, computer skills, paper charts, and exposure to various health care systems around the state and in other parts of the country. Staying motivated is tricky. But I am determined!

I like the Incredibly Easy! Series. They aren't as dry as my old nursing texts and they make for more enjoyable "leisure" reading. I know these books aren't specifically about transition, but I found that it helped to clear up things that were still muddy to me in nursing school and better prepared me for my transition.

Thank you Jmart I will look into them.
