First Week of Nursing School!!!!

Published

Oh my word. My first week of an extremely competitive and rigorous BSN nursing program is coming to a close and I have so much going on inside my head.

In 4 short days I have made contact with so many people who have told me first hand horror stories of entering the program with a 3.5-4.0 and then flunking out. One girl said and I quote "I have never failed like I failed in that program." I am currently taking my main clinical course with several students who are retaking it because they failed it the previous semester!

I know that I need to block out all of that negativity. I know that people graduate from this program, so it is possible. But in spite of that, doubt is creeping in. Do I have what it takes? Just reading over the material so far has made me feel inadequate and ill-prepared. I'm sure this is normal but I am normally really confident in myself and my abilities so it's quite disconcerting for me to feel this way.

So basically the game plan is to take it ONE DAY AT A TIME. To breathe deeply, believe in myself and trust that I can do what I need to do to succeed in this program. You are either your greatest enemy or greatest advocate right? Right.

I just graduated from a challenging BSN program this past Spring, but I still do remember very clearly that 'end of the first week scared to death feeling' when professors are just throwing info at you left and right and piling up the work. it can be extremely overwhelming BUT Its not impossible as you said yourself! It sounds like you have a good mind set so far which will get you way farther than you may think. Don't let others negativity intimidate you, nursing school can get ugly at times with the competition but there are also students that are willing to work together as a team to get through the challenge with you! Remember you don't need to have A 4.0 to make it. there were times I honestly wanted to quit because i wasn't to par with how i thought i should be doing but if I did that I wouldn't have passed my NCLEX-RN 2 weeks ago..

my advice to you would be as you said: take it one day at a time, believe in yourself!!! try to find a study buddy(ies) stay on top of your work best you can,, and most importantly have some good stress relievers on the side

take care, & Good Luck with the semester:)

I just started my first semester too and we got one week down!! We can do this..I get scared too but remember to stay positive and work hard!! :)

You are so right! I wish you all the best!!

Thanks so much for your comment. I literally soak up any and all advice aI can get from previous nursing students. A BIG congrats on graduating and passing your NCLEX! Good luck in your future!

Today marks the end of my first week too...it was an overwhelming week for me. I am taking it one day at a time, which is keeping me from running away from nursing school at full speed! Haha!

You are going to have moments where 'positive' seems impossible. There will be tears & what-ifs. Fight through them. I promise every nursing student has these moments and they will pass. It's the people who can fight through the down times that make it to the end. Good luck and keep up your awesomely positive attitude!!
