First semester nursing student

Published

Hi all. I am first semester nursing student 2nd B.S. degree) at UMSL. I was originally going full-time but i dropped 2 courses because i felt very overwhelmed . I am one of those older students returning to school at age 48. Never too old to learn......is my philosophy. Anyway I currently not working but I am looking for part-time jobs in healthcare so I can gain some healthcare experience. My background was mostly clerical/professional secretary with some limited healthcare experience. I had a very bad lab experience in Fundmentals and ended up dropping the course. It had to do with a return demonstration of a procedure. I was to demonstrate the procedure to one of the lab instructors and when i failed to do it correctly she lost her patience (no pun intended) and took it out on me in fron t of other students. I was very humuliated. Has anyone else had negative or bad lab experience? I feel like i am the only person that has had bad experience.

No, your not the only one who has had that experience. It happened to quite a few students in my class. Mostly, they were not prepared as they should have been - which is hard because of everything that we have to learn. I have witnessed the venting of stressed out teachers. Our teachers all seemed to dramatically improve in how they treated us mid-way through the first semester. Hope it continues...

I also believe it's never too late for a career change & I'm really enjoying it even if it can be very stressful for students (& teachers). Now, I really like my teachers. Teacher's should "care" in a professional manner - not lose it!

Sorry, you had that experience.

Keep going - it'll be worth it!
