First LPN job... Realistic Expectations

So I'm about to start a 1-year long program to become an LPN. If I hopefully survive that and pass my NCLEX, I want to do the LPN to RN at the same school while working as an LPN.

So,, I was wondering, for all you LPN's out there, what was your first job as an LPN, and what realistic expectations should I set? I would love to work in a clinic or ambulatory hospital setting, versus a nursing home.

I've only worked at nursing homes. Realistically acute care jobs want RNs. I actually like nursing homes because you have set hours and the pay is great, I walked through the door making $22/hr.

Just be open minded, its all a learning experience. As a new nurse you are going to make mistakes. Also, some nurses can be mean and not willing to help you, others will take you under their wing.

Well in Ohio at least there are a few hospitals that utilize LPNs in the acute care setting. That being said they want people with experience. Realistically you are most likely looking at LTC or Home Healthcare until you have experience.

My first job was in home health followed by LTC. I am also pursuing my BSN. LTC teaches you time management above all else. When you have 30 clients you learn to manage time effectively. Also LTC pays more than acute care so don't rule it out.

I graduated a month ago and have got offers from clinics, assisted living facilities, and an urgent care. It has not been too hard finding work- the single advantage you can have is healthcare experience!!! I currently still work my hospital pct job and accepted a urgent care job for $21/Hr.

Hospitals are the one place it will be tough finding a LVN job, but it sounds like you are interested in reachable options. You should be ok, just try to get experience somewhere while your in school:-)
