Hi. I'm a pre-nursing student with another year to go before nursing school itself. I heard from classmates that UPMC (Pittsburgh, PA) offers training to their new PCT's, so I applied for several positions and recently had an interview on a surgical oncology floor. After my background clearance, I'll be scheduled to shadow for a few hours, but it seems very hopeful that I will be offered a position.
I don't know what to expect. Is Surg Onc a good starting point? The nurse I interviewed with says there are alot of wound dressings, wound vacs, drains, total isolation patients, but no vents or chemo. I'm excited for the opportunity to learn so much, but scared by what I will see and being overwhelmed by just how sick these patients are.
