I will be starting my Anesthesia program this fall. I just got a notice from my financial aid department with my federal loan award amounts for next year. It was my understanding that graduate students could take up to a max of $18,500 per year. What I was offered was no where near that amount. What???!!!! I will be lising my entire income, and what they said I can borrow won't even cover tuition! The school has not yet notified anyone of scholarships to cover tuition. I should qualify for something there. Im just wondering if anyone else has had difficulty with student loan amounts. What did you do to cover the cost of living? I have already been told that working is not an option in this program, and I am a single mom who has obligations outside of school. I am trying to not sign a stipend agreement with a group, as I am not sure where I want to work. Any ideas?
Thanks!!!

My experinence, and that of everyone I spoke with, is that they received the 18 500.
The best people to talk with are those at the financial aid office.

When they calculated your eligibility it included your current employment. You have to go to financial aid and make an amendement to your FAFSA. It is just a matter of saying that you will no longer have income when school starts.

Try a private loan, such as through Sallie Mae. They will let you borrow over the cost of tuition to pay for housing and stuff.
Thanks for the helpful info. I spoke with the "nice" people in financial aid today. They informed me that they might decrease the total of the loans by the amount of any other aid I get. (Haven't been awarded my scholarship yet). I practically had to beg for info on how to get the special circumstances form so I can clue them in on my loss of income for 27 months. Also, I spoke with other students in the program....they all got a scholarship AND 18,500 in loans. Someone is dropping the ball on this somewhere. I plan to keep bugging them until they fix it! Thank God that the anesthesia department isn't so unorganized.
Frustrating!
