final 2 weeks of orientation on med-surg....

Published

I have 2 final weeks left of my orientation on med-surg floor, and have been with many wonderful preceptors. The last few weeks, I've been with a very-detailed preceptor whom I've "clicked" with. I've appreciated all of her ideas on charting & procedures and communicating with pts. She is switching to nights this week, and has offered me to work this week (3 days) with her on the night shift schedule. I would still be finishing my last week of orientation working the day shift. The charge nurse gave advice by saying this would not be in my best interest as I will be working on days and I will be learning more by finishing my last 2 weeks on days. I would have to find a new preceptor these last 2 weeks for the day shift which is really no problem, since there are many qualified nurses on this floor. The nurse manager and educator for this floor said doing the night shift this week (7p to 7a) would be a good experience for me, I would get to see how that shift operates. What would you do?

I would do it! You obviously having a good rapport with this nurse, learn all you can!!

I also feel it is extremely important for nurse's to understand the "little nuances" that change from shift to shift. Days is days, with its own set of priorities. Nights is different. I think all nurses should be encouraged to see as many different aspects of the job as possible. It makes us all a little more tolerant of each other.

thanks jetsetter!! appreciate the response!! I will.

When you get your paycheck look at the differential for night duty. For three 12 hr (plus extra hours charting, etc.) shifts per week, esp if on the weekend it should add on $300-$500/mo more if you are just starting out. It's usually not as crazy as days--usually.

I agree. I'm not sure why the Charge nurse doesn't feel this would be in your best interest.
