Final semester - community placement.. problems with a job in the future??

Published

Hi, I am starting my final consolidation in a doctors office, doing immunizations, records etc.. I am wondering if this will harm me in the future trying to find a job?

Its not bed side, and its more of a walk in clinic. I want to work in the hospital in the future, but am now scared this may look bad coming out of nursing school. (Practical nursing)

Thanks

I personally believe that every nursing placement has value and isn't a dead end. You might feel like this placement could limit your future but you're going to learn about triage, time management, working with a very diverse patient group, and those ever valuable communication skill. Nurses do get hired onto their final placement but it's not a sure thing and doing a placement in a doctors office won't mean you can't get a hospital job.

I did my final placement in a hospital but didn't end up getting a job on the unit I did my consolidation on. It might not seem like it now but you're in control of where your career goes. Try to keep an open mind and learn as much as you can in your consolidation.

Don't stress about the future that no one knows for sure. Make the best out of your experience and learn as much as you can. Depending on the hiring manager they may see it as a disadvantage or advantage. With that being said, there are people who didn't do bedside nursing in consolidation but were hired in hospitals after graduation.
