Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

I am feeling discourged has anyone else been in this position? I am taking the NET next month, and even after I pass that I still have such a long wait. I have taken all of the pre-reqs. I should have taken the NET while I was taking my last pre-reqs but I did'nt know it could take two YEARS.

I have taken 3extra historys classess one xtra Psch class and now i am in an EMT class. I am taking all these extra classes because I cannot afford to start paying back my loans yet. I actually looked at the pre-reqs for a History degree because I have taken so much history, love it. Not as much as science and Nursing things though.

On top of that, some of the posts I have been reading lately scare me to death, about new nurses not being able to find jobs, etc. I am 50yrs old, not old, but I need to finish this...

Sorry hope I am not sounding like a complainer, I am thankful for everything so far, I just want to know if anyone else out there is in the same boat. :uhoh3:

Why is it taking you two years? Are you talking about your pre-reqs? Don't give up! If it's something you really want to do, you can do it. Think about it. In two years you will either have a nursing degree or you won't. But you'll still be 2 years older, so why not make it a future with that degree?

The economy is tough right now so I don't think its only nurses feeling the pinch.

Something is gonna break for those folks out there that are hitting the pavement trying to find a job. It may take longer than they would have liked, but sooner or later it will happen. Economy aside, I think a lot of folks went into this thinking that they would be snapped up and things would be smooth sailing. I was always told that a job search takes 3-6 months on average, and this was before the crappy economy. Given the economy, its understandable that it might take a bit longer.

If you do something else, you are likely to find the same issue. The economy just really sucks right now, who knows, 2 years from now there might be some recovery and the job market might get a little better.

I too question what is taking 2 years. If you have all your pre-requisitions then why are you having to take other 'non-nursing' courses. Have you applied somewhere where they only open for new participants every two years or something? I am just a little confused about what you are referring to. As for the 'feeling discouraged' part, I can totally relate. I too am 50 years young but have been a nurse for more than 1/2 of them. I have never had a problem getting a job, my problem is that I feel discouraged that I can't do enough for those I am trying to help because our government keeps cutting our reimbursement and people can't afford to get the care they need and deserve.

Oh my goodness this forum gives me sooo much inspiration, just getting a response brings me back up, I am a serious happy go lucky person, this cloud over my sun is rare.

Sorry my post was vague. I am all finished with all pre-reqs. The two year wait, I hear, after I pass my NET next month is; It usually takes two years to get into the real nursing school, Nurse 101, 2, 3,4 semesters. The reason I am taking Non-nursing courses is:

(1) I do not have a full-time job right now and If I do not take at least 6 credits in college I have to start paying back my student loans.

(2) I have a stipend of $600 a month that I recieve from a scholarship, because my GPA is high, and I would lose that if I stopped taking courses. I know it is not much but it is something.

(3) That pretty much raps it up.

I have been a CNA for 15yrs and a Restaurant Manager for 4yrs, i have a cert as a phlebotomist, a crisis counselor, and oh my stars even run a health care agency, non-profit for my daughter with CP. But my love is Nursing, I love the scent of Band-Aids and rubbing alcohol and clean rooms, Thought i would add these last things to make you smile. Thank you all for giving me hope.:yeah::redbeathe:nurse:

Oh and thank you Mangopeach, what a cute name: for the info on the economy, yes it is the whole plethra of jobs, never really thought about it in a universal way like that..

And; I so thank you, York-hamRNCCRC, on your telling me not to give up. And the fact that you are around my age, and the fact that you have been in the field, for awhile. Yes, I have made myself more aware of the dilemma

of the Nursing problems in the media and on this great website.

It seems to me; just by my observations as a CNA, in Long term, ICU and Hospice, that the RN is the fall guy for alot. Not to mention, the unbelievable (Bad) Nurse to Patient ratio I have seen as a CNA, some of these Nurses should get the Noble Peace Prize for the amount of things they do.

You know as a CNA we see things and most (not all) really do not pay attention to CNAs they are just there and whatever, not accounted as Nursing support staff, but you know what, I have learned from all these years as a CNA, If you really want to see who the great Nurses are then ask a CNA because, when those curtains close we REALLY see who is good.

Oh my goodness I just realized I am ranting, sorry you have opened the floodgates in my mind, now I am not at all discourged, I guess I just needed to know there was someone out there, who understood my journey.

York-hamRNCCRC I did accept your invitation for friend/chat, but I am not so savvy with computer stuff, so I am not sure how to access your private friendship?

Greetings from Maine.:heartbeat:)
