Feeling burnt out =/

Nursing Students General Students

Hi my name is Chris, i'm a first semester nursing student and I'm new to allnurses.com. =) that being said, this is my first post.

Anyways, nursing school is tough! I was aware of all of the studying, and reading but I never realized how much time management plays a big role in nursing school.

I'm a person who likes routine, and Nursing school is everything but following routine. Sacrificing alot of time, like giving up time to workout in order to read the 50 chapters assigned, or give up hanging out with friends on weekends in order to work on your care plan... everything is completely thrown out of wack for me and I'm having a hard time adjusting =/ and on top of that I work a 12 hour nightshift PRN.

I passed my first two exams (yay!) but then failed my third one (boo) by four points... it's been a downer for me ever since. Feel like a failure, and studying is hard for me now, I guess I'm afraid that I'll fail the next one as well...

Most new college students do not realize that nursing classes - especially clinicals - don't allow for much of a "traditional" college experience - at least my BSN program did not. Some of the students attempted to get involved in sororities, etc, go out at night, party etc. The majority of them changed majors OR changed their behavior to continue on in the program. Late nights, having a lot of time off to do things like hang w/friends, work out etc. was VERY limited during the school year. Most of us were in the hospital at 6 a.m. or class by 8 when other majors were sleeping in or just getting home. I will be completely honest, though nursing has provided a lot of opportunities for me, mostly job security and the ability to try new flavors of nursing from time to time, I DO regret not having had more fun in college - NOT drinking etc, that was never an interest of mine - but being able to go to the socials, movies etc. There was no way to do this AND pass my classes. IF I had to do it over again, knowing what I do now...I'm not sure I would be a nurse. It takes a lot to get licensed and even more to stay in the profession much past the first few years. You can't have it all right now - some may tell you otherwise, but if you are already failing exams, its time to take a look at what you really want to commit yourself to do. Good luck.

Yup.. thats what I've basically done. And concluded that yes, I really want to be a nurse... and let these temporary things pass, they'll always be there. Just have to step my game up
