Fear of transcript holding me back

Published

Hi all. I'm currently a 2nd year science student at a Canadian university. Throughout these two years I have been battling depression but was only recently officially diagnosed with it by my doctor. Because of my struggles and a poorly-scheduled timetable, I landed on Academic Probation at the end of my first year. This second year, my depression has gotten worse and I am unlikely to achieve the average needed to be promoted back to Good Standing, even though I technically will not fall under 50% GPA. I am trying with all I can. But even with that said, I will most likely have to be dismissed from my institution for 12 months before reapplying.

Now I have been interested in nursing school for some time now. My plan now is to take courses at a community college to boost my GPA, take the prereqs, and then apply to a BSN program at the same community college.

My transcript from my post-secondary institution is not the best... I have several A's and A-'s, B's and B-, some C's, but I have 4 F's. Yes, four. That brings my average down a lot. And along with that, it will probably end up saying I have been dismissed from the institution for failing to meet Good Standing requirements. My high school transcript however, was a 93% entering into university from the IB curriculum, and I have 18 credits worth of transfer credits.

I have recently started medication and want to be optimistic about my future, but still realistic...Even if I do incredibly well in those CC courses + prereqs for nursing, will they never consider me based on the fact that I did not successfully stay in university at one point?

Thank you for reading and good luck to all your future nursing endeavours!

Hello Onwardupward,

First off, I am sorry to hear about your past troubles, but I am glad to read you are taking control and being optimistic!

I am going to school in the Fall for pre-nursing and I met with the Dept Chair in regards to the program. For the most part it seems that there are GPA overall requirements and passing the nursing pre-reqs that are considered. Basically if while seeking your pre nursing course this time around you receive a 3.0 and you pass your nursing courses you maybe accepted into the nursing program. Your previous academic information may help to determine general education requirements. Well that is how it is in the USA. Please check with the school you are thinking of attending and be upfront and candid with the advisor. They should let you know what they are looking for in regards to academic performance and what from your previous schooling will help or hinder you and the steps to achieve success!

Best of luck to youí ½í¸ƒ
