Hi everyone!
Decided to start a thread for the upcoming University of Miami FT Fall 2019 Acute Care Program.

I had two people interview me.. they were very nice and personable. My interview lasted maybe 15 minutes... they asked me to tell them about myself... what I thought the role of an acute care np is and why I wanted to pursue this career... a difficult time with a pt where I had to go above and beyond to advocate for them... what my strengths and weaknesses are.. and also pathophysiology of sepsis. The last one threw me off guard because I was expecting more of a clinical scenario type of question.. but they just said tell us about sepsis lol

What kind of questions were you asked in your interview? I have applied to the Spring term of 2020 and want to prepare for success!
Thanks
Hi! Sorry for the late response....it was very easy going interview...they asked what is the role of a ARNP, they asked 2-3 case scenarios questions based on your experience. They want to see you use your critical thinking skills. They also asked what was your financial plan being it’s a FT program and if you had support. If you happened to know a colleague that went through the program before make sure to mention it..I did! Good Luck!

Also, there were only 2 people that interview me. They were both professors and actually one was the Director if the Acute Care program...Dr. Crenshaw...loved her!!

We picked our classes but still most of them say TBA and at this point I still have no idea how many days a week we should plan to be on campus and in clinical. I’m obviously aware it’s full time but some people have said 3 days on campus a week & some say more and although it’s not ideal I am going to have to continue to work at the beginning of the program to finish a hospital contract. When I asked the director about how many days “off” a week we would have so I could plan accordingly with my current employer she basically just responded that they want me to be successful and I can’t work.
I know no program will ENCOURAGE working, but for some it is necessary and I just wish our schedule wouldn’t be a secret at this point with us starting in less than 2 months .
any help or info you guys have will be much appreciated!!

Thank you so much for this information! It is extremely helpful! Were you accepted into the program? Also, for he patho question, how did they go about it? I am afraid to blank out although I deal with those kinds of patients often ? I wonder if they are looking for a detailed answer.
Yes, I start in the Fall. I work Trauma so my first question was a traumatic event that caused a tension pneumothorax...they wanted to know what the overall treatment plan and the diagnostic tools I would order. The other question was regarding a abdominal aortic aneurysm. I think Dr. Crenshaw chose that bc that is her background (CV). Again they gave me a case scenario of this type of patient and asked me what is my treatment plan and diagnostic tools and pharmacology question on what drug I would order for this patient. They did also ask the typical interview questions; tells us about yourself and strengths and weaknesses. It was maybe 20min long interview...honestly it is stressful at first but it was so easy ongoing afterwards...they were awesome!

I did get accepted:) that’s how I felt as well.. like I said I was def thrown off as I was expecting more of a “your patient presents with this this and this what do you think is going on” kind of question but they literally said can you describe to us the pathophysiology of sepsis and what occurs at a cellular level .. so i took a second to try to gather my thoughts and just started talking ab the process what happens and how those things manifest as things we see in the patient I.e. changes in labs low bp ams tachycardia etc and I felt like I rambled on forever and they just sat there and smiled and at one point I was like uhhh I might be talking too much should I keep going? They just laughed and told me they just wanted to gauge my critical thinking ability and where my knowledge base starts and that they were very happy with my answer. Again.. they were very nice and didn’t “grill” me.. they just want to make sure you’re not a crazy person and also that you’re critical thinking ability is there.
