Hi,

Im new to this website and I was hoping I could get a little help or advise on the nursing program at TWU in houston. I was recently accepted and I have a few questions!! If any one can help I would appreciate it. Thanks!!

What is the class schedule like when students begin in the fall?

Do we have to purchase specific scrubs? or what is the dress code?

Does anyone know when the advisement session is?

Please feel free to tell me any extra information or what to expect in the program. Im so excited and nervous at the same time!! :)

Congratulations.

We are all still waiting for our packets. Our advisement session should be around the beginning of May. Not too sure about dress code or schedules yet but if you look at past threads some awesome current students have given an example of what we may be looking at :D

Thank you very much for your help I appreciate it! :)

Congrats! I am just completing my second semester at TWU Houston. You are going to love it!

You don't have to buy scrubs from TWU. You just have to have wine/maroon colored scrubs. No one has ever really cared about shoes so far that I know of... You only need to wear scrubs for labs & clinicals. If you're ever going to the lab to practice, you'll need to wear scrubs or a lab coat and closed toed shoes. For regular classes, you can wear whatever floats your boat.

Lectures are Monday and Tuesday, with labs & clinicals Tuesday-Saturday. You'll have lab & clinical each once a week, not every day from Tues-Sat. My lab and clinical were Tuesday & Thursday, so I was driving to the med center Mon-Thurs every week (had to go Wednesday to get patient info for care plan). And if you still need patho, I think it's on Thursday. I'm not sure if they are offering a summer course for Houston.

Thank you for your help!!!:D

Hi TXCatcher I had a few more questions I hope you dont mind! :) I wanted to know if nursing students go to school in the summer as well. Or can we take classes in the summer to have less classes during the fall? Also I wanted to know what you found necessary to purchase when you started school? that way I have an idea what I do and dont need to get. Thanks!!

There are some summer school courses, but don't count on them. I'm taking my senior elective this summer. A few people put off taking aging, research, and groups so they could take them in the summer, and now they're not being offered.

I would buy two sets of scrubs, lab coat, two name tags, three patches, shoes, stethoscope, watch, and maybe a clipboard. They have lots of other things you can buy if you want them...such as a blood pressure cuff and pocket organizers... Some people find this stuff useful, but I haven't really found a need for them yet. I bought my scrubs at a store in Katy and bought books, stethoscope, shoes, & watch from Amazon & Zappos. Littman makes the best stethoscopes...just make sure it has a diaphragm and a bell, which most of them do I think. I'm pretty sure the lab kit comes with a penlight, so you don't need to buy that. That's all I can think of right now that you'll absolutely need.

Oh, and you can only buy the name tags and patches from TWU... You can also buy all the other stuff, but it's not required to buy it there.

I really appreciate your help. I'm so nervous and excited at the same time! It is soooooo hard to be patient :) and wait to find out more information from the school. Thanks again!!

Hi tx catcher i was just emailing you again to ask a question. I just wanted to know if there was any advice you could give me on the patho class because i am taking it right now and i feel lost!! I dont know if you felt the same way but i am starting to panic a little! It is not very clear on what and what not to study. I have pretty much studied everything but i am just worried. Please email me back when you get a chance. Thanks!

By the way how is school going for you :)

School is going great for me! :)

I'm not entirely sure how to study for patho because I had a different teacher (sort of...). Have you been to tutoring? The kids from last semester said it was good. I know that I didn't really read the book, but went to it when I was just lost. For our class, almost everything came from the notes. I'm pretty sure she does essay tests now, and we had multiple choice... If you do like to read, I always found that breaking the reading up into small chunks (around 10pgs), and then taking breaks in between each chunk so as to not get too tired. Also, talk your notes out to yourself aloud and come up with mnemonic devices when possible. I would even recite the stuff I knew while taking a shower just for the extra practice.

My biggest piece of advice (for all of nursing school as well) is to not get too overwhelmed. So long as you apply yourself, you'll do well. It's really not too hard, just don't over-think things. If you sense a meltdown, just stop for a while. You can't learn if you're freaking out...trust me, I know.

Hope some of that helps!

Im glad school is going great for you! Yes she will be having essays on our tests now and the class will be hybrid as well. That is the part that scares me a little bit since I learn better from the teacher, but i will continue to study!! I havent gone to tutoring because I work that day but i will ask to change my work day if i continue to have trouble in class. Thanks so much for your advice I will make sure to keep that in mind :)
