Experiences/Perspectives/Insight!

Hello,

I am a twenty-two year old male and I am very much considering a career in nursing. Ever since I was young I always knew I wanted a career that would allow me to directly help people; the thought of saving someones life scares/thrills me. What interests me a lot about nursing is the humility and self-sacrifice that comes with the profession. I know that I will never live my life happily if I don't pursue a career that changes peoples lives for the better.

I was hoping that some of the nurses here would take the time to share their experiences in nursing. Be it nursing school, working in different departments (ER, OR, MH...etc), or what have you. Any insight is appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

I am 22 and I just got my license today. Nursing is a very rewarding and honorable career. It doesn't show as much when you are early on in school but once you start working with patients you feel a since of pride knowing that everything you do helps the healing process, even turning a patient.

It wonderful that you are considering a career in Nursing. Literally every 6 months to a year you can switch types of nursing within any hospital, this allows you to keep learning something new all the time and it feels like a completely new job each time. In other words you will never be bored. You don't really get interviewed by people, rather you interview them. On the other hand you may never get a lunch because you are always too busy, but then again this makes your shift go by faster. Also you only have to work 3 day per week and you will have four off. Nursing is the best possible career if you ask me; I hate be stagnant and not learning. Good luck to you.

P.S. please go to a medical surgical floor to start you will never regret all the skills you learn on these units. Going straight to an ICU will not serve you well as you will not obtain the assessment skills and a multitude of other skills you will use forever. If being a good nurse is what you want learn all you can to better serve your patients. Learn to walk first.

Thank you both so much for the replies, I appreciate the advice.

Do you think it would be beneficial to take an LPN program first and get some experience in that realm before I go for my bachelors?
