experienced RN moving to Pittsburgh...what is the job market like??

Published

Hi everyone!

My husband may be relocated to Pittsburgh in the next year and I am just wondering what the nursing climate is like in the area??

I have 12 years of nursing experience- level 1 ICU, CCU and PACU. I don't see alot of job postings on the UPMC website....which makes me very hesitant to move there.

Secondly...how does the payscale work there? is it based on experience or by hospital etc??

Lots to think about and I appreciate anyone and everyones help!

I work at UPMC Presby, I couldnt imagine them not having alot of job postings there are allways a large amount throughout the system. Payscale goes on experience, education, certification and by hospital. We have some bonuses that we can get in our department that I know aren't offered and the community setting. There job postings usually give you ballpark figures as salary goes. With your ICU background wouldn't see why you would have trouble getting in one of the hospitals.

Not only are there large UPMC hospitals here but there is Allegheny General Hospital and West Penn Hospital. There are also decent hospitals in the suburbs that are doing well and expanding such as St. Clair Hospital and Jefferson Regional Medical Center. The city hospitals pay more and I would guess that the top three in order are Presbyterian, Mercy and Shadyside based overall acuity (Presby and Mercy get a lot of gun shots and trauma) and where they are located.

You will have no problem getting a good job here!!
