experience

I'm only a stuedent right now, but I've looked at many of the job postings for RNs around canada and most of the require experience.

how do we get expereience if no one is willing to give us any?

Kinda scared that It will take me liek 6 years out of school before I'm finally in the job I want. I don't mind a year or 2.

Or is that experience jsut what they hope for but are willing ot comprimise?

First, I'm a student too so i haven't yet tried to find a job, but i have run into many new grads in my placements.

I know that many of the hospitals in the greater toronto area at least have programs for new grads that include long orientation with classroom learning and a preceptorship. I think it depends on what you are looking for. I think if you are looking for something more specialized it is to your advantage to do your consolidation in a unit that you want to work in so they can see first hand how great you are :)

good luck!

Most job postings ask for experience but for most it's not a requirment it is a nice to have. If someone else with expreience does also apply they will most likely get the position but you are better off to apply for them all because if it's all new grads applying for the job you have a good chance. Just remeber that what a job posting lists is what they would prefer the person they hire to have but they will always consider people who don't meet every requirment.

I totally agree with the above posts. Hospitals state what they would like, but that doesn't stop you from applying. Many of the "good" hospitals have a new graduate recruiting programme so you can apply directly with them and they will be able to help you find a floor that will give you the skills to eventually get to where you want to go, if the floor/i]unit you ultimetly want doesn't accept new grads. Just food for thought. Personally, I want cardiac care, however I'm more interested in re-hab than the CCU. The CCU is a specialty area so they don't take new grads. HOwever, there is another cardiac care which is less acute which does( ie this more of what I want anyway). I have an interview on Monday (wish me luck). It isn't always possible to get the job you think you want without a bit of experience, however that doesn't mean you cannot enter that area in a different capacity. I'll let you know what happens.

Don't let this scare you for two more years... worry about those clinicals and doing great in those because your success there will help you get your 1st job.
