Excelsior preceptorship

Published

Hi, does anyone have suggestions for obtaining a preceptor for the program in Maryland, District of Columbia, Virgina or Delaware? I just learned this is needed to be licensed in Maryland.

Thanks

Hey, really? That is good news for students in Maryland. :)

Yup, but E.C. seems to be unaware of the requirement, which has been in place since 2008 as I was told by the board of nursing. I spoke with one of E.C. admissions nursing staff members today and he was unaware of the policy, or able to provide any direction. The requirement states you must have clinicals simular to those whom have went to a traditional program.

can you call around and ask some of the local hospitals?

I may be able to but I think most want an agreement with the school, of which EC does not offer. I have not taken the first exam due to this glitch. I want to eventually be able to get licensed in Maryland.

Wiggles did you ever think about getting licensed out of state that has an agreement and then endorse into Maryland? There are several states that require a certain amount of clinical hours before sitting for NCLEX. Colorado & Washington will allow you to do the preceptorship while you're waiting for graduation. They don't offer any units for the clinicals though. Oklahoma also allows you do the preceptorship while you're waiting for graduation and you get 2 units of credit. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply NurseCubanita, I have thought this out. You can get licensed in DC then endorse over to Maryland. But only if you have over 1000 hrs of preceptorship time. And this can be done in any state.

Can you show me on the MBON where it states this about EC? I haven't been able to find it. The last thing I could find was that EC students had to be NCLEX-ready by 12/31/07, and people who finished later could NOT endorse in.

Wow 1000 of preceptorship time????? In CA it's 810 of clinical time for RN graduates. Is that 1000 for all graduates or just the ones with out any nursing background?

Hi,

I actually called to speak with someone at the board of nursing after reading this link http://www.mbon.org/main.php?v=norm&p=0&c=licensure/index.html. She then confirmed this did apply to EC grads as well. I may be unclear about the 1000 hrs. I have to dig for the paper from the information she provided. :)

Lunah is right you need to check again both with EC AND Maryland BON

this is directly from the EC website: Maryland Direct Licensure/Endorsement: Excelsior students who graduated on or before December 31, 2007 are eligible to apply for licensure. Otherwise, licensure is not available.
