does every nursing program in southeast michigan have a wait??

U.S.A. Michigan

hey everybody.

im a student @ Schoolcraft College in Livonia and got word that the current wait to enter the nursing program is THREE YEARS. It was two years when i began my college career in the fall of 09. I'm looking to pursue a BSN and was wondering if there are any schools nearby that don't have that bad of a waitlist. I'm also wondering if you can take other classes towards a BSN or ADN after you finish your pre-reqs but aren't in the program yet.

all the best,

Actually you're at one of only two in the area who even do a waitlist. Currently the only CC's with a wait list are Henry Ford and Schoolcraft (and yes, the wait at Henry Ford is probably as long as the one at Schoolcraft). All the other schools have switched over to competitive admissions-- you apply for a certain start date and you're in or out. Those with the highest grades and test scores are in, those with less impressive GPAs and scores are not. Of course if your GPA isn't stellar it's always good to put your name on a wait list because you know you will get into a program even if it may take a few years. If you have a competitive GPA look into OCC, MCC, and WCCCD (and maybe even Washtenaw since you're out that way-- don't really know anything about their program but you could call and ask)

And of course I would STRONGLY urge you to take all other classes except the nursing courses required for graduation BEFORE entering a nursing program. Those classes will suck up all your time and if you have to take other classes like sociology or whatever as well you're only making it more difficult on yourself. Take as many classes as you can to get them out of the way, whether they be for your ADN or BSN. Just be aware that some schools have a cap on how "old" of a science they will accept. Some want them to be within 7 years, some 10, some don't care so be sure to check with institutions where you are considering BSN completion. Current programs in the area for BSN completion that I can think of are UofD Mercy, Oakland, and Madonna (and there may be more). I know Wayne and U of M got rid of their programs.

Or you could just save a step and apply for a BSN program..... They all have competitive admissions as well and expand your choice of schools.

Good luck!

I know OU's BSN program has about a 3 year wait as well, but WayneStateKatie is right, everyone else has done away with waiting lists. MCC is a good route to go because unlike WCCC, you don't have to take a certain amount of credit hours with them before you're allowed to apply. As long as you have A&P, Micro and English 1 done (from any school) and take the HESI entrance test, you can apply. I think you have to take 12 credits with WCCC before they let you apply. I know nothing about OCC's program, other than nursing is only out in Highland Lakes, and I never looked into it because it's WAYYY too far from me. If you're applying for an ADN program, you should pick a school that you plan on completeing your BSN through (I chose U of D) and start taking classes that they require while you wait. Good luck to you!

oh wow thanks so much for the info! i've completed one year in college @ Scraft working on my pre-reqs and will be continuing for the 10-11 year. After that, i'll most likely be looking for a school to transfer to for a BSN. You said Wayne State got rid of their nursing program, why is that? do they not offer nursing degrees there anymore?

kyle.

Wayne did away with their BSN completion program, not their regular BSN program. From what I understand though, they only take 50 some people a year, and there way they figure it out is through who has taken all of their classes there (they're the first to get in), then who has taken most classes and all sciences (they're second to get in) and it goes down the line. There are 5 tiers of classifications, and I'm unsure if there is an entrance test. But that is something to consider if you're taking all your classes at Scraft

Wayne State seems extremely competitive and thru one year i have like a 3.287 GPA i believe. looking to get better this year. Im also interested in Eastern Michigan but im open to anything that comes along at this point by the sound of how competitive it is getting into any given nursing program.
