Evening/weekend courses for ASN?

U.S.A. Indiana

Hi, new to this forum! I'm looking into getting my ASN from Ivy Tech (or perhaps another school), but when I reviewed course schedule/times, it appears that most classes are offered during the day only (I looked at multiple campuses and this is the case). Given that my husband and I are planning to start a family very soon (I'm 30 and it's time!) and daycare is $$ (especially on one salary, which already will be a major sacrifice for us!), I was really hoping that there might be some evening class options or weekend class options.

Do you know if this is the case at all with Ivy Tech? Are there other colleges here locally that do offer ASN 2/3 year programs that have evening or weekend options? Any help will be much appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Hi There,

I'm not personally aware of any school in Indiana that has a strictly weekend/evening option for ASN.There are BSN courses that have weekend options and online options, but no ASN.

I'm going to graduate from the PN program soon, and I just thought I'd warn you that nursing school is INCREDIBLY intensive. To be honest, I wouldn't recommend trying to combine starting a family with attending nursing school. Not if you actually want to enjoy both experiences.

Perhaps you could work on your pre-reqs for now, then apply to nursing school later, after your baby is born. I know there are a number of pre-reqs that you could take at Ivy Tech (although none are on the weekend). Or, you could put off having your family for a few years and concentrate on getting through school. THAT is what I would do if I were in your shoes! If I could live my life over again, I would not have combined caring for family with trying to get through nursing school. I would have postponed having children until I was through school. The advantage of waiting to start your family would be twofold-no daycare to worry about, and more time to concentrate on studying. Because believe me, you eat, sleep, and BREATHE nursing when you are in nursing school. There is very little time for anything else.

Good luck, whatever you decide:)

Hello!

I have searched high and low myself for an evening or weekend program, but never have come across one. I am a mom of four, and put off going back to school for family.

This fall three of my four will be in school all day. I am taking a science w/lab at the Ivy Tech campus, and taking other prereqs online. You can't even apply to most nursing programs until you have certain prereqs done. It will take a year full time to complete all the prereqs for the ASN in nursing.

I would suggest checking out online courses at Ivy Tech, or ICN.org.

Good luck!

Ladies,

Thanks for your very helpful replies! I was suspecting that it would probably take 3-4 years to get the ASN with the prereqs included and that it would be best to hold off until I had kids and they were in school. Fortunately, I have a good job (even if it's dead end) in the healthcare field that can pay the bills for now. My SIL's sister went back to get her ASN at age 38 (SIL has hers too but was smart enought to get it right out of high school!), so it's proven that this can be done! Thanks again for your words of wisdom.

Indiana Wesleyan has an evening/weekend associates program in Greenwood starting in July and I think January. They are really nice to work with. The website is http://caps.indwes.edu/nursing/asn/ I was looking into this program but was accepted into Ivy Tech's ASN program.
