Epidemiology help

Published

So for this nursing class of mine, I have to do a group project on testicular cancer and each member got a section to work on. I got picked to write the epidemiology of testicular cancer. My only problem is what the heck is epidemiology? Any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated!

Epidemiology has to do with the study of diseases in a population. It is basically the foundation of public health. Think of the word "epidemic." When something is an epidemic, it is spreading fast through a population. Ok, so if you're talking about the epidemiology of testicular cancer, you first need to determine what population you're looking at. Global? National? Local? Who gets testicular cancer in this population? Does it affect certain groups more than others? Are there certain risk factors that put people at a risk for getting it? Risky behaviors? Socioeconomic status? Age? Are there higher concentrations of testicular cancer in one part of the state/country/world (or whatever part of the population you're looking at) than another? Are there more people getting it now then there were 100 years ago? What are the trends like? Epidemiology is not looking at the cause or the treatment or proving that certain risk factors cause it, you're just looking at who is getting it and how they're getting it and when and where they're getting it. You'll want to back up everything with lots of statistics. Epidemiology is all about numbers and statistics. Epidemiologists are very important in populations and it's actually an interesting topic, at least in my opinion. :)

I hope this helped. If not, there's always google. Good luck!

Thanks so much!
