Entry Level/UVA MSN/CNL

U.S.A. Virginia

Hi everyone,

I know this topic has been discussed before, but I had a few questions for students who are currently in the program or have graduated from the program (entry level MSN/CNL program at UVa)

I have previous AS/BS/MS degrees, all with either magna or summa cum laude. I also have about five years of healthcare experience, including my current job in the ED. However, I am wondering how much weight pre-requisites hold in the application process? I am embarrassed to admit I have a C in one of the pre-reqs...only because it was my first semester in college several years ago and I was learning time management in college :whistling: (I don't mind retaking this course, but not sure if I will be allowed to apply by deadline?)

I also have leadership experience and some good references...but not sure if that pre-req grade is going to kick me out of the process.

Also, does anyone work while in this program (or in the accelerated BSN at VCU)? It certainly looks challenging with 1000 hours of clinicals and classes over a 24 month period. Unfortunately....I do not know how I can give up a job due to the needed benefits. I have always worked while in school, but I was not sure how jobs were handled if in the program.

Thank you!

I have also thought of going through a local community college for an RN or through an accelerated BSN program for my RN....then applying to UVa's RN to MSN/CNL. If it's not possible to work in the entry level program, is it easier to work in the program for RNs?

Hi,

I just graduated from UVA CNL program~! I would argue a "C" could totally hurt you, what class is it in? They do really look at those but they also look at the whole package. I remember one of the admissions people telling me they really expect A's in those classes. You can retake it and still apply. I didn't have the psychology class even started when I was accepted. I had A's in all other pre-reqs though. They also take into consideration how well your essays are and references. They abide by the holistic approach but I do think a C might hurt you.

As for working, I know people in the class graduating next year there are some that work full time. My mentee works full time(she is a phlebotomist) and gets great grades. There is flexibility to work and how successful you are in the program while working will depend on how good you are at time management.

The CNL program is wonderful and if you can go this route over community college, than do it!

This route is not possible at a community college - Most community colleges have an RN(ADN), but CNL would never be taught at a community college (especially since it is a master's level program at UVa). I am debating the RN at CC, only due to finances.

The C may be a moot point - it is over 5 years old so it would be disregarded anyway. Interestingly, I made an A in part two of this course. The humorous part though is that I have graduated from my associate/bachelor/masters all with high honors, along with working as a healthcare provider for the last several years.

I left a comment but it disappeared. BOO. I should of clarified that YES you cannot get the CNL degree at the community college. It would save you a ton of money but the MSN CNL is ranked #2 in the nation and imagine that on your resume. It is a great program and you are guaranteed a job if you stay at UVA before you graduate. I knew about my job in Feb. :) UVA offers a CONWAY scholarship which is basically a full ride if you are in-state. Something to consider. You would apply for that. I think they take 6-8 students. I guess it comes down to what you want out of your degree. Do you want to pursue a certificate like an NP then the CNL is the way to go.

I had a C in one of my pre-requisite courses, and I was offered acceptance to UVA's CNL program contingent upon retaking the course and getting a higher grade. I took the course again, got an A, and started the CNL program less than one month later.

Hope that helps :)

Does everyone receive an interview? This wait feel like it is taking forever already. I am worried that my essays were weak because I really didn't have anyone to read over them. I didn't include my past experience working as a temp. in a hospital and really didn't explain why I want to go to UVA adequately. I am really hoping that I will get an interview.

Not everyone is selected for an interview. I didn't get mine until late November.

Thank you! Fingers crossed.

Hello, All! I've started a thread for the CNL applicants entering in 2016. Please let anyone else know who is applying so we can keep up with where everyone's process is :)
