Hi Woogy,

Can you tell me a little more about Dr. Overstreet? I am curious to know if her presentations and DVD's would prepare one for the CFCN exam in your opinion( do you plan to get certified?)? ALso, does she get into the paperwork/pt. records and business end of it?

I may want to fly out there as you did, but it would have to be really worth it for me to spend the $$$ as I am in Pennsylvania.

I have purchased the MUSC's DVDs (which were expensive compared to Overstreet's, but show very detailed assessment skills). I am registered for the U of Wisconsin's Foot Care course in October. I have arranged for a shadowing/hands-on experience with a Podiatrist on the East Coast ( not sure if he can provide the same info that Overstreet does....but it's free so I'll give it a try). Finally, I am scheduled for free small business consultations and classes with SCORE ( a free resource through the Small Business Administration). Hopefully, I can be up and running by November.

Just curious.....Do you mind sharing what tools does Dr. Overstreet trained you with and which sterilization options does she recommend for nurses?

Hi there, I am sure that Dr. Overstreet does a great job in many ways, but she is still teaching the use of the dremel grinder ... not the vac drill. That makes me very nervous! If she is not up to date with what is being recommended by the literature for us to use, then this is not good. The dremel grinder is a craft tool and not appropriate to use on feet. Many argue that the vac drills are not affordable. I say that you can not afford NOT to use the right tools.

For Flockone....

I'm in Southeast Pennsylvania. I'd be flying out of Philly or Allentown.

While I'm registered for this class, I am second guessing my decision. The site is very inconvenient to the airport ( which cannot be reached by direct flight). The airfare is quite expensive and I would need to rent a car to drive about 1hour on top of that. Because of this, my business partner has cancelled so I am now solo ( no one to share the costs with).

Have you researched airfare and logistics yet? If I'm wrong about this , please fill me in.

I am in the process of researching other programs.......not that many out there by the way.

There are a few in California that may be more convenient logistically. However, I like the idea of going to a university-based program.

What have you already researched?

I live in Buffalo NY. I was planning on driving (have hubby go with me). But for the money for the class, gas, and room I began to research other avenues. There is nothing close to me at all. There is a weeks class in New Brunswick Canada which looks good, but is far and the total price is alot. I just met with the recruiter at a local Beauty School for the Nail Tech program which is 600 hrs. total and after testing would have NY State license. The program looks good (even though I would learn to do artifical nails, wraps, etc.) I would get a solid education on foot care, practical experience, sterlization, business practices, marketing. I am seriously looking at this program...the cost is reasonable and I feel I would get a much better education and practical experience for my practice!!

I took the class in Wisconsin two years ago. I went by myself from the west coast. I took a shuttle from the Minn/St. Paul airport and it took me right to my hotel. I stayed with in walking distance to both locations (lecture and clinic). There were a lot of restaurants and I even ordered in pizza. The shuttle picked me up at my hotel (this was an extra charge) at dropped me off at the airport. It was pretty painless.

I've been following this discussion for quite awhile as I have been interested in getting training and certification in Foot Care Nursing. It never seemed like a viable option for me, but there seem to be more classes available now in the US and I find myself getting excited. There is a course being offered in California (L.A.) October 14th-16th. From the brochure, it meets the requirements necessary to sit for the CFCN exam. I have been in phone and e-mail communication with the instructor and she is so helpful and enthusiastic, so I am planning on going out there for it. She's been doing this work for 17+ years and helped develop the certification exam. She has so much knowledge and experience to share and was one of the authors of the recent article in the Journal of WOCN. I live in CT and see that there are other east coasters who may be interested in attending. I am thinking of flying out on the 13th so I don't have to feel rushed time-wise, and heading back on the 17th. Flights seemed reasonable at around $375/round trip.

It would be wonderful to connect with others who may be going.
