English speaking Nurse Wishing to become registered in Germany. What is the process?

Hi,

My name is Robin and I intend to move to Germany within the next year or two. My partner lives in Munich and I live in Sydney, Australia...a bit of a distance! I've been working in ICU for the last 4 years, and this year I've gained my Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) status in the feild of Adult General ICU. In 2006 I completed my post grad degree in ICU, so that may give academic leverage. I speak very limited german, definately not enough to carry out a professional conversation at the bedside.

What I would like to know is would it be possible for a nurse such as my self to become registered, knowing that I'm not fluent in german. If so, what is the process of registration, and are there many english speaking hospitals within Germany?

Specializes in Medical and general practice now LTC.

Most countries require a fluency in language to be able to work. I found this on a search for nursing in Germany http://ec.europa.eu/internal_market/qualifications/docs/nurses/2000-study/nurses_germany_en.pdf

May be worth asking your boyfriend to approach local hospitals HR and see if there are any assistance. Not sure on job availability on Germany but sure I read in this forum a while ago on a couple of nurses in Germany that had complaints. Have you tried searching using keyword Germany? Also I know within EU there is some sort of rule that EU country must employ own citizen then EU before rest of world so may experience some difficulties

Specializes in Anaesthetics, Critical Care.

Hi Robin, I am German and I moved to the UK because I was unemployed in Germany. It is very hard to get a job in Germany as many hospitals are closing.

With ICU experience it could be easier.

The German authority ist the "Gesundheitsamt" in Munich. I think if you are from outside of Europe you have to sit for a language test. Not only done for nurses. This is a new thing since 2007 to integrate foreigners. They have to prove within 3 months or so that they speak German.

Please write me a pm if you need further information on this.

Robin, Did you move to germany? What did you find out?
