Endangered by nursing school politics?!?!

Nursing Students General Students

Since the beginning of last Fall, the faculty at my school have had a problem with our class. Actually, they have problems with those who will stoop to any level to disrespect them, even if it means yelling at them in front of the entire class, forwarding a copy of a nasty email to the entire class originally intended for the instructor, or defying clinical instructors' authority when they don't get their way.

We have spoken with the BSN coordinator (of whom has received hate mail and in-class humiliation) concerning this and how we can stop all of the chaos. She has told us that the issue is now being taken to the head school and legal action is being taken by the university and by some of the students!! Reportedly, clinical instructors will be lost over this issue and whatever is surrounding it (I know I don't have the full story). She also told us that she will not be writing any recommendation letters for our class and that this situation puts our entire class in danger of getting jobs in the Medical Center once we graduate. Not only that, but we still have a year left of school and those people are making a bad name for our class among the nursing faculty at our school thereby making it harder on all of us.

I really need some advice/opinions if you think this will really effect me and what I can do to exclude myself as much as possible and make a good name for myself. Please help...thanks in advance!

I'm sorry you are in such a stressful situation. As if nursing school is not hard enough already.

First I would recommend that you stay away from all of the gossip. The instructors and staff know who is "yelling at them in class", forwarding e-mails and causing the disruption. If you are not one of those people then don't get involved. It's easy to get drawn into other people's drama, but you will be best served by steering clear. You stated that you don't have the full story, once again if it does not involve you, stay clear. It is not your job or responsibility to "stop the chaos", unless once again you are initiating it.I'm sure you have an advisor assigned to you through the school, this is a good person to approach with your concerns and advice.

As fas as recommendation letters, I suggest collecting those throughout your clinical experience from clinical instructors. They see your talents and skills on the floor and IMPO write the best letters.

Good luck and once again don't get sucked into drama others create. By focusing on yourself and doing your personal best you will rise above the troublemakers.

Thanks for the advice about requesting letters of reference from the clinical faculty...I will definitely do that.

One of the reasons I am turning to this board for advice is that my advisor IS the main faculty member involved in all of this. I have considered going to her about it, but haven't decided exactly what to say.

Thanks again!

Hi there! If you don't mind me asking...what school are you going to? I'm in the Houston area as well. The school that I am wanting to apply to...I have heard of ALOT of politics and I just hope and pray it's not the same one!! Sorry to hear you are having such a hard time!

I'm so sorry to hear of your unfortunate position. Your class (no offense) sounds horrendous! It frightens me to think of the guilty parties actually graduating and representing nurses. Poor patients. Poor you stuck in this mess. Maybe you could approach your professor and let her/him know that you are not one of the disruptive people. That's what I would do. It would be shame to be lumped in with the others wouldn't it? :o

Like the poster above said. Keep your distance. I'm sure the profffs know who the guilty parties are but like I said it wouldn't hurt to stress that by approaching them. I'm sure they'd be open to that. I hope. :)

Good luck to you.

Unfortunately, I would not feel right posting the name of the school. I think that incomming students will not be at a disadvantage but rather at an advantage because the school will probably institute more policies to prevent this from happening in the future.

Besides all of this, I think the school has a great program and it would be a shame to anyone to turn down the opportunity to attend just because of heresay.

That's true but I reread your post and you mentioned BSN so I am assuming that you are getting your BSN. I will be getting my ADN so I feel a little bit better! Well, again, I hope everything works out for you! Good luck!
