Hi there!
I worked as a Paramedic, and I just got accepted into nursing school. I love emergency medicine, but the demanding hours, low pay, and staying on a medic all day really made me want to do something else.
I am hoping that my skills from being a paramedic will help me through nursing school. And more importantly, I hope that I find nursing just as exciting as being a paramedic. My ultimate goal is to to work as a RN flight nurse, so I suppose the two lines of work are very similar! :-)
Are you applying to nursing school now?
im still working on my pre-reqs.. gotta take Micro and Physio..
thats cool you worked as a medic.. did you do 911? i was gonna go through the Medic route but down here in southern cali its all Fire based Medics and non of them are hiring and wont be hiring for a very long time.. there isonly one county here that has a private ambulance medic that does 911 but they pay horrible..
i wanna eaither do ER/flight or Trauma... i love emergency medicine too. its a rush!
Yes, I did 911. It was fun... I got a ton of experience and every class I take I learn even more! I know nursing school will still be a challenge since emergency medicine is so much different...
If you really want to be a medic, you should. I actually got a job with a local fire dept. as a fire/medic. I ended up quitting before I even started b/c I had three kids and i didn't want to leave them for 48 hours at a time. (they were on the 48/96 schedule and my husband also works for the fire dept). This is one of my biggest life regrets!!!! I should have kept the job and I would have been so happy. So, learn from someone who has been there, and if you have a passion for doing it, you should reach for those goal! The fire departments will hire again, and when they do there will be a ton of job openings!
That's not to say I won't be happy as a nurse, I will, it's just going to take a while to get to where I want to be. :-)
