EMT exp and ABC questions?

Published

Hey there I wanted to ask if any of the students who were EMT's have found that your training and experience has helped you immensely with nursing school. I just know there has been a couple of times, where instead having to come really dig for an answer when it comes to pt. care you just fall right into the ABC framework. I know everybody in our class knows it, but I feel like it wasn't explained enough to students who don't have experience or have never had to really apply it? I'm sure this seems convulated, I'm curious to see if you anybody else has picked up on that. It's not that others won't know it they just wont know when to apply it?

EMT and nursing processes are vastly different. EMT one "goes down the line" of first you do this, then you do this....and it is how one is tested at the end of the program....one does not go off on "nursing" thinking ie: WHY is this happening, HOW can a patient function.....

I also recall (back in the dark ages) that nursing students needed CPR training and certification at some point in their education?

One of the trickiest things I recall is the difference in being a nurse, and being an EMT....it takes 2 totally different mindsets.

Actually I really like the way you explained that! I agree EMS Is based heavily on "algorithims" where nursing is much more detective work. I think they both have there place!
