EMR & Co-Signing Medications

We were having this discussion this morning about how to co-sign in the EMR/BCMA for medications such as IV pain medications, IV heparin, insulin, TPN, chemo & so forth. Our current record only allows us to type in who we verified the medication with. We found we can scan their badge & have it entered into the EMR, which brings up a potential security issue. I would like to know how others record verification or co-sign nurse with their medications.

We have to actually sign our 3/4 ID (username) and password for each narcotic/pca drip hang, iv insulin, and iv heparin.

Specializes in NICU, PICU, PACU.

We have several meds/gtts that need dual signatures. Our IT built in a double sign screen. We sign off the med like we always do then another screen pops up for a verification sign off. They have to enter their username and then answer two of their security questions. They went against the badge scanning for the reasons you state.
