Employment

Hi Allnurses:

I am happy to join your community. I am new to this site.

Previously, I have been reading your articles.

Since I must work, can anyone share with me their personal

experiences with attending college. What is the best time of

day for classes or vice versa? I need some insight before

taking on employment.

Thanks for your help.

A little more info would be helpful to answer your question. Are you a pre-nursing student? Already in a program?

I'd try one of two things, if you don't have kids. Best option would be to find a CNA position somewhere in a hospital to gain healthcare experience. This might give you a leg up on your job hunt after graduation. CNA positions will not pay an awesome wage, though, and your hours will be long. Weekends will be your best bet.

The second option would be in a restaurant or bar. If you find a good one, tips will be good and hours are great for students. You won't have to get to work until 4:00 or so if you only work dinner shifts, so working on weekdays won't be impossible.

If you have kids, it will be more complicated. I actually chose to not work while I was in school and thankfully had a spouse who supported that choice. We pinched pennies everywhere we could. It was a struggle, but well worth it. If you aren't currently living with a spouse/significant other and have kids, I'm sure single parents might be able to chime in with their ideas.
