embracing my fears

I have decided to try for a mobility 2 day/wk LVN-RN program. It is specifically designed for working paramedics and LVN's. I have been resistant to this idea because they require college algebra (the 4 day per week programs don't). College Algebra is my nemisis. I remember struggling with it 22 yrs ago in high school while sailing through English with honors. I don't have trouble with drip rates and calculations, but square roots and radicals make my flesh crawl! I would rather write a 20 page research paper than do Algebra. Since I am starting the Weekend Program at work (Fri-Sun) a 2 day/wk transition program will be ideal. So, I am going to embrace the Algebra course and think of it as one more rung on my way up the ladder. If I decide to persue a BSN, I will at least have the Algebra under my belt.

Any kind words from those of you who are Algebra-challenged and made it through will be greatly appreciated!

When I started at the community college I attend, almost 2 yrs ago, I had to start with basic algebra. It had been about 22 yrs since I had algebra in high school, so I was scared to death of it!! Even though it was tough to get back into it, I managed to finish the class with a B. I then had to go on to advanced algebra, and found it to be incredibly easy. I made straight A's all the way through. So, I think once you get back into the mode of learning math, you should be ok...just remember to ask for help if you need it!!! Good Luck! :)

You sound so much like me... I aced all English courses, but Algebra ... *shudder*. When I took it, I had to force myself to stay calm and not flip ahead or allow myself to see everything as a big jumble. I made myself be methodical and take one step at a time, and talked myself through each problem. I did as many practice problems as I could find in the book, and found more online. The practice problems cinched it for me, and I actually passed the course with a 92. The more practice problems you do, the more comfortable you get. It can be done! Good luck!
