Embarrassed and Ashamed LPN

Dear Nurse Beth,

I graduated from LPN school in the fall of 2012, but i never took my nclex, I'm so embarrassed and ashamed of myself but I do know I want to finish what I started, I just don't know where to start or if my dream is too far gone,

Your dream is not too far gone, but making dreams happen depends on you and what you are willing to do.

When you are feeling helpless, the best thing to do is to take action. This helps you be in control.

To start, contact the overseeing LPN board in your state. They will tell you if you are eligible or not to take the NCLEX.

You have already met the requirement of completing an LPN training program- give yourself credit. It's an accomplishment! I started out as an LVN and I'll never forget how difficult the coursework was for me. Harder in many ways than my RN training, because it was all new knowledge with nothing to build on.

Next, you need to find out if you are still within the testing time frame. You may be required to take a refresher course- that is doable.

Then you apply and submit all the required documents (transcripts), along with the fee. You will need to study and practice taking NCLEX questions, but there are so many resources to help you.

There are some great apps for your phone that drill you on questions and help point out your areas for further study.

It's really is all within your power. Do it!

I graduated LPN school in January 2014, and didn't take my NCLEX until June 2017. I passed the first time by studying for three months with Hurst review, ATI, and a review book with NCLEX questions and rationales. Life happens ... :) don't feel ashamed, not everybody's road / journey is the same. You can do it, just find out where you need to start and map out your plan. Good Luck !
