Hi all...just wondering if anyone has done one of their placements abroad? Im thinking of going to Australia in my 2nd year but i dont know how to go about it. Do i contact a uni over there? And if you have been over there, how much did it cost roughly...Do u think they would give me a free place to stay? Any information would be great! Thanks xx

As I posted before to a similar question - we had a student nurse who did her elective in New York. She was at Anglia Ruskin. Therefore, it can be done, I guess it's down to your uni & your money situation.

Suggest you go talk to the placement advisor.

hi all...

i have had a meeting with my nursing lecturer today about elective placements and apparently we have to research it all ourselves by googling it and stuff and go through organisational sites etc.

hope this helps

Im a 3rd year midwifery student and Im in the process of finalising arrangements for my elective placement in Malawi.

We have to research our choice ourselves including, funding, where we want to go, what hospitals/units we want to visit, accommodation, travel, insurance...pretty much everything. I was lucky that our midwifery professor has worldwide contacts thanks to her work with the WHO so she put us in contact with her colleagues in Africa.

Does your uni support the ERASMUS ( http://www.erasmus.ac.uk/ ) programme?

We cant use it as midwifery students as our placement is only 3 weeks but it might be worth looking into if your interested in a longer (usually a couple of months at least) placement. This allows you to be basically placed within a university in the area you want to go to as well as being officially mentored by staff to allow you to practice fully while you're there. There is also usually funding that goes along with ERASMUS placements so might be worth looking into.

There are also a few other sources of funding if you dont go through ERASMUS so thats worth looking into also.

Hope that helps.

Hi there I am also a nursing student in my third year (in Edinburgh, Scotland) and was hoping to do my elective in australia. I know a nurse that was over there last year and really enjoyed it. I know we definately have to do all the researching ourselves and decide where we wanna go. I know there are people who can fund us I just don't know where to find them.

If you get any info can you let me know.

I'll keep you posted too.
