EL-MSN at Charles Drew University, Los Angeles

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

I was wondering if anyone has heard anything about the new entry level MSN program at Charles Drew University of Medicine & Science in Los Angeles. I've done searches on all nurses but haven't come up with anything. I know the requirements for admission and such, but I'm more curious about the quality of the program/university. I'm considering applying for fall 2011, so any infomation, good or bad, would be helpful.

Thanks! :redbeathe

My interview was a couple of weeks ago, mid June I believe. And I think school starts last week of August. I really do wish someone from the program would post more of their experience here =\ I was wondering about their clinicals... I do hope we are placed in a hospital.....

THIS IS THE DRAMA ASSOCIATED WITH DREW HOSPITAL. I AM LOOKING INTO THE MASTERS ENTRY PROGRAM FROM A BS AND HAVE A FEW CONCERNS DUE TO THE HOSPITALS TARNISHED PAST. THEY CHANGED THEIR NAME TO DISASSOCIATE WITH WHAT OCCURRED WHEN THEY REOPENED AFTER BEING ORDERED CLOSED BY THE GOV'T.

I AM WILLING TO CHECK THEM OUT, AS IT COULD BE A GOOD NURSING SCHOOL (NOW).

Problems surface again at Charles Drew Hospital (taken from Wickipedia / copy/paste

Despite initially upbeat official reports from hospital officials[11], King-Harbor found itself under public criticism once again after different stories ran in both the Los Angeles Times[12][13] and LA Weekly[14] in late May 2007 citing serious lapses in care, one of which was fatal, at the renamed hospital.

the latest on the "drama" at drew:

"charles r. drew university of medicine and science was removed from academic probation by its accrediting agency this week, the latest indication the south los angeles medical school is recovering from recent financial woes"

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2011/07/charles-r-drew-university-removed-from-academic-probation.html

"after putting charles drew on probation, wasc conducted a two-year assessment process during which it examined the university's academic, financial, governance and quality control systems.

lifting the probation

according to charles drew, wasc lifted the probation because of several improvements at the school. for example, the school said it has:

  • created a new advisory and governing board;
  • developed a strategic growth plan;
  • opened a new $43 million nursing school; and
  • received $10 million in funding support from the university of california (los angeles daily news, 7/13)."

congrats, you know that saying "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all".....well I will leave it at that about the school. I am sure your experience will be better than mine since the school is learning from their mistakes each semester....

As a current student I would not recommend the school. better to go to Fullerton, CSULA, UCLA, better and cheaper... or Mount Saint Marys 50,000 for 1year BSN after that you can do an easy online MSN like one at CSU, DH:

Con:

1) staff are real butt holes, they literally do not teach you but test you on things not covered. My teacher there screams at her students and talks about herself most of the lecture time.

2) They are unorganized. Example they tell you day before to have to take a test on a day you dont have class.

3) They have problems getting clinicals site. Example some student literally go to Hemet over 1 hour away.

4) about 70K in tuition alone, over 100,000 with living etc., reminder they dont want you to work. Therefore this program will cost 100,000

5) not accrediated by NLNAC ( you can not work for VA, UCLA, army...)

6) In my class about 1/3 of us received C+

7) Some classes about 50-60 people

Hi, I'm looking for any information on Charles Drew University Entry Level Masters Program. What is the experience like? The Pro's and Con's

Thank you!

Any current students here? Has the school gotten better/more organized?

any current students here?

any current students here?

I am not a current student, however I am a recent graduate (2013) of Charles Drew University Mervyn M. Dymally School of Nursing's (MMDSON) Entry Level Masters (ELM) Program. Since I don't know what your question is, I will share my perception of the the school, the quality of education, and my experience.

My perception of MMDSON is that it is a new school and is still experiencing growing pains. That being said the school is state of the art. The teachers are for the most part very good and highly qualified. The pace of the program is fast paced, grueling so students must learn very quickly how to prioritize, multitask and work together in various group assignments. In addition to the standard nursing curriculum, they are heavy on research and how to integrate evidence based practice (EBP) into clinical practice. We also spent time studying management.

I believe the quality of the education is good overall. My previous degree was in biology. That being said completing the ELM program was the most difficult thing I have ever accomplished academically in my life!!! We were continuously prepared for our NCLEX from our very first semester and once we completed our last class we were enrolled in NCLEX prep classes by the school (it is built into the tuition). I passed my NCLEX on the first try and in less than 100 questions.

My experience was rough but ultimately rewarding because all the hours of studying, the lack of sleep, the stress and the headaches eventually paid off. I feel the value of my education especially the focus of the school on serving diverse, medically under-served and under-insured populations and being culturally competent.

You can only decide for yourself if this is right for you. Good Luck!

Thank you for sharing your experience with us, MSN-RN'14 ! It is very valuable information to share, especially when there is not a lot of alumni to get in touch with. I just got accepted into the program for fall 2014 and am very excited to attend. I also graduated with a bio degree and to hear this program was very challenging intimidates me since biology was hard already! Needless to say, it is a masters program, not a bachelors.

Congrats on passing your NCLEX the first time, it really shows all the hard work you put in pays off. If you don't mind me asking, what are your next plans since you passed the NCLEX? Have you started working? Do you plan on working in LA? Do they have financial programs where they pay your school if you work in an underserved community? Sorry for all the questions! One of my biggest concerns is facing the job market once I'm done with school. Thanks again!

@MSN-RN'14 Thank you so much for your detailed response. I applied to CDU and am hoping to hear back any day. If you mind, I just have one question, what was your schedule like. Are there multiple class/rotation times, or does the whole class have the same schedule? I was trying to get an idea by looking at the class schedules but really couldn't figure it out. Also I did see that student are enrolled in fall, spring and summer for 2 years. Are there any breaks in between?

i have some questions for you would you be able to email at [email protected] thanks
