Educator pay vs. floor nurse pay

Published

I applied for, and was offered a nurse educator position. I'm ready to go for it. The catch? They offered me $2 less an hour than my current base. Is that typical? This is the career path I want to take, so if it's necessary, I'll do it. It just seems bizarre to me that the people tasked with educating staff would be paid so poorly. I asked to negotiate, so the HR person is going to see what she can do. If this is the norm, I'll just take it and try to pick up a PRN gig to make up the difference. If this isn't normal, I'll pass and keep looking. Anyone have insight?

I took a pay cut for this position, but preferred the regular hours, responsibilities. I now earn more than most floor nurses. (Hospital). However, faculty pays much less. I do work some adjunct faculty to keep my hand in. Funny to me that when organizations want to solve the "nursing shortage" problem, they give money to the schools, but the schools do not pay better to attract instructors and the students still do not have money for tuition. I think the money is going to the wrong places.

I realized I never said thank you for all the advice. I've never negotiated pay before and it worked. Talk about empowering! I start my new job soon and can't be happier.

I made the same amount but received a stipend every quarter, not much but the extra money was nice.
