I'm an RN student. I had the opportunity to have a placement in the ED for clinicals.
For me, it was a day like any other. I was assigned to a clinical ED rotation.
It was a busy day when I arrived before 7am, ready for the next 12 hours of what I assumed, would be like most other clinical days: paperwork, charting, fear of missing something, etcetera.
But the fabulous ED supervisor asked a tech to give me a tour. She was awesome. Then the unit supervisor took me under his wing and I was able to see the big picture of receiving report of multiple BIBA pts and the subsequent assessments.
ED Nurses asked me to do lots of stuff and explained stuff to me if I didn't know how.
Techs took me under their wings and taught me how to do things I'd never done before.
Thank you, ED nurses, and every nurse, who's ever had a student and took the time to teach and explain.
I know that you aren't paid to teach student nurses. I know you were all super busy when I was on your unit.
I'm not knocking other specialties. I've had awesome nurses in almost every clinical I've ever had. However, Something about my ED experience made me feel good. Perhaps it was the teamwork you all exemplified. Perhaps it was your "get it done" attitude.
I just want to say Thank you to all the nurses who take time to help students learn and understand. You do indeed make a difference.
