Ears:To tube or not to tube

I have a question for everyone.

My son is 26 months old. Has a Hx of heart disease including one open heart surgery and 5 caths so far since surgery. He has severe hearing loss in his left ear and normal hearing in his right. In this last year, he's had a few ear infections but they've never really gone away. His pediatrician tells me he has an ear infection, but he never shows any signs like pulling at his ears, fever or anything. His otolaryngologist wants to put tubes in his ears. I've done a little research online about it, but I wanted to get some feedback about what your experiences with tubes have been. Should I just wait it out since most ear infections stop happening at age 3 or 4? Or do the tubes?

Thank You!
