I live in Colorado but am applying to take my NCLEX in Nebraska (possibly moving to Oregon/Washington later on)
In October 2019 I had gotten in a terrible argument with my parents. I took my kids and was driving to my friend's house to stay a couple of days so I could cool off. On the way there, my car started shuttering so I pulled into a parking lot and waited for her to come get me. She was at work so she told me she wouldn't be off for another two hours. My kids were asleep, my coping mechanisms sucked, and I pulled a 6 pack out of the trunk that I was planning on bringing to her house. About an hour later I got a knock on the window from the police. In my state, you don't have to be driving to get a DUI. I was arrested on child abuse and DUI. This was during my first semester of nursing school.
The child abuse charge was dismissed and the DUI dropped to a DWAI since I was never driving. However, I can't get the DWAI expunged in my state and I can't expunge the child abuse charge since it is connected to the DWAI in the arrest report.
I graduate in 5 days, and am waiting to apply to take the test until my charges from 10 years ago get expunged (still in the process of that). When I apply to take the test, I will have only the DWAI and the dismissed child abuse charge. My professors keep insisting that this should not bar me from getting a license, and that most jobs will hire me regardless if I have an unrestricted license (they have been nurses for 30+ years and say they've seen nurses in similar situations working flight for life, ICU, etc. However, they did not have the attached/dismissed child abuse charge)
I still can't relax though. I am worried it is going to keep me from being a nurse.
I have started my own candle company, became a trainer at my work, went through individual and group therapy, and have about a years worth of clean drug tests.
Has anyone been in my situation and what can I expect?
