Will be starting the clinical aspect of crna school very soon. Like nursing school, there were things I wish I would have known prior to my clinical experience. Can y'all think of anything for a new student to educate himself on prior to starting school to "impress" my instructors or to stand out from the crowd. Some of the precepting md's and crna's have been having students in and out for many years, and from what i here from senior students, they are pretty brutal toward the newbies.
thanks

Let me give you the advice about a dozen or so people on this site have given me and everybody else. Rest up for now, and worry about the clinical and the didactic that goes with it when it comes, becaues you will need the rest. Your program will teach you what you need to know while you are in clinical, and in the classroom. But having the rest you need prior to starting the actual program is more valuable than anything. During the program, you will be criticized and torn apart by most you will come in contact with during your clinical experience. There aint nothing stopping it, so just work hard while you are in the clinical area.
I think the biggest thing while you are in the clinical area is just to prepare yourself the night before, do your homework, and ask lots of questions if you have the time while you are taking care of your patient. Get your money's worth. I haven't started clinical yet, but will in about another month. I just started the crna portion, and it is taking copious amounts of time out of my day already, and I haven't even gotten to clinical yet. My program is an integrated program.
Oh, my other advice is keep coming back. (I sound like I'm in AA, but the infor. you get on here, and the stories people tell can be invaluable as well).

I agree with Pete495, let it come when it comes. I asked the same questions and regardless of what anyone tells you, anxiety will abound.:uhoh21: Preparation is essential and ATTITUDE is vital. What I mean by that is, you are there to learn, and that excitement and eagerness will spill over into your disposition.....also, remember that EVERYONE has had to be in your position at some point or another. I am in my second semester of an integrated program and I am loving it!:heartbeat No, I don't know it all, and yes, I am enjoying it at the same time that I am enduring it!:rotfl: Try not to beat yourself up worrying. There was a group of my classmates that spent several weekends prior to the start of clinical in the OR. We would scavenge hunt to locate supplies, practice machine checks, practice ploss cart setups, etc. It really helped especially in the desensitization realm......you know, when you walk through the OR door, your HR increases by about 30 bpm. After being in the OR environment for a little bit, the HR seems to stay WNL. Take care and God bless!
Also remember, the seniors are always glad to see the juniors come into the OR because it takes most of the heat off of them!:wink2:
