Drug Nomenclature

Hello all, new to the site but need some help on drug names. We just went over it today in class and will be tested on it tomorrow.

Slightly confused about the drug nomenclatures, so take Ritalin for example:

the Chemical name would be....? I can't figure that one out.

The generic name would be methylphenidate?

The Official name would be Ritalin?

The trade name would be Riphenidate, Methylin, Methidate, Ritalin, Ritalin SR?

Am I even somewhat close?

Any help would be much appreciated!

it's chemical name is methyl (alpha)-phenyl-2-piperidineacetate hydrochloride

it's official name is methylphenidate hydrochloride

it's generic name is the shortened version of the official name. it is simply methylphenidate.

it's trade name, or brand name, is ritalin, as well as riphenidate, methylin, methidate, etc.

it belongs to the chemical class of piperidine derivatives

you can find out more about ritalin from here:

thank you much!
