Don't you want to be an NP?

Published

I was accepted into nursing school the end of April, and since then I have been getting that question from many family and friends. When I tell them that I don't have plans to become an NP they seem so surprised. They say things like, "but you are too smart to just be an RN" or "you could make so much more money". Then they go on to give me an example of so and so who they know who is an NP.

Although I try to be patient with them, I am getting a little tired of that question. I know I am smart, that is why I want to be an RN. I definitely do not think of it as settling. Honestly, it seems like there are so many new NPs anyways that it would probably be more difficult to find a job than as an RN.

I am not just going to be an RN. I am going to be an RN! Anyone else have this experience? Do your loved ones think RN isn't good enough?

There are many people that always think they know what is best for someone else's life. It could also be that many people do not really understand how educated nurses are today. Personally, I would not let anyone else opinion make you feel bad or irritate you. Be proud that you will become an RN!! Everyone has a path in life and you have chosen yours. At some point, you could want to veer off in another direction (NP, educator, DNP) and that is OK.

It could always be worse... I am the black sheep for going to college. My family thinks college educated people are stuck up. I was excited when I was accepted into the University of South Florida's nursing program but I was the only one in the family that was.

Do you ever get people that ask you "why don't you continue on to be a doctor?" Like a doctor is the next step up from an RN....lol seriously? They're 2 completely different fields!
