Don't laugh at me for this...

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Ok, I know you are going to think I've lost my mind but let me explain something. I am just now beginning my pre-reqs for nursing school at Brookhaven. I can finish all the required classes this fall but I also need to take the HESI A2 exam. My problem is that I will only be 3 weeks into A&P I by the time I have to take this test. I have no expectations at all and actually don't plan on applying for nursing school until next year. I am wanting to take the HESI A2 exam just so that I can be familiar with the test before I REALLY need the score to apply for NS. BUT, I do not want to go into the test knowing I'm going to bomb it. I would like to be somewhat prepared so I don't feel like a complete idiot. Can anyone please tell me how "in-depth" the A&P portion of this test is? Ex: do I need to know the 3 main parts of a cell or every single part w/in those 3 parts, etc.?? Any help would be appreciated. Like I said, I'm not looking to do well, I'm just not wanting to totally bomb it. :uhoh21: Thanks in advance!! Heather

Hi mom24boys !

Where are you from ? I am in the a very similar situation. I am 37 with an 8mth old girl and 4 year old boy. I just registered for A&P 1 at my community college (I have my bachelors degree so supposedly that is all I need for prereqs....) I have to take the HESI test and pass that in order to get into the Nursing Program.

I wish I could help you with what is on the test .......sorry !

Have you already began your A&P ?

Specializes in DOU.

I barely remember taking it, but I remember needing to know basic Algebra and how to read for comprehension. It didn't have any anatomy or physiology at all; it was easy.

Hi, mom24boys!

I am a mom23boys :) I am not sure that 3 weeks of A&P will adequately prepare you for any A&P type questions. When I took A&P, our first unit(first 2ish weeks) only covered cells and such..just like I had had in Biology the term before. A&P is pretty comprehensive.

I have no knowledge of the HESI, but I imagine the questions will be things that you do not already know. You could certainly skim your entire textbook, and highlight the majors in every chapter. You will probably need to know bones, muscles, basic info on every system, hormones, circulation, how the brain works, etc.

Good luck!!!

I took a test to enter NS called the TEAS test. If the HESI is the same thing(nursing school entrance exam) then you will be tested on Vocabulary,Spelling,Reading,Science, and Math. They are testing your basic knowledge base of attending school in general to see if you can handle the curriculum of NS. There is Science on it, but if you get a book to help you review for the test, like Kaplans Nursing School Entrance Exams it will show you what kinds of things they will ask. If you can recognize when a word doesn't look right and know some Algebra and of course basic math and you read with good comprehension you will do fine. If the Science is a concern, get a review book and look it over, you might decide to save your money on the test this time around and study your review book until the next test is offered at which time you will have finished A&P 1. The review book will give just as good an idea of what is on the test as taking it, and I believe every test is pretty different in what they ask.

Thank you so much for your help everyone! I start my classes next week. I am a NCMA and a former EMT so I know some basic A&P. I plan on reading through as much of my book as possible (at least skim the sections). The $25 isn't necessarily a problem especially if I'll know what to expect when I really need the grade. My husband and I own 2 business, I'm taking 14 credit hours, and I have 4 boys under the age of 6 so I definitely have my work cut out for me. I strive under stressful situations!!! :lol2:

Thanks again,

Heather

4 under 6??? WOW :pumpiron: You are supermom!!

Good luck on your test :)
