Don't know whether to take the job

Specializes in med surg.

I just finished an interview and shadow process today at a pediatric outpatient clinic for a possible job there. There would be no holidays or weekends and the environment is supposed to be way less stressful than my current inpatient adult med surg hospital position. However, however, however, I have never worked with kids before. I don't really see myself as good with kids. So, I'm trying to decide whether to take this job or not. Like I'm literally scared of kids haha. If I'm not some bubbly kid oriented person naturally, maybe this isn't the right fit? Maybe I'm being too hard on myself. It's not like the people I shadowed were extremely bubbly or anything. They just were confident in their job and talking to the parents and the children. Even holding down the children crying screaming as they give them a shot. I just don't know that it's for me...

Specializes in Pediatric Private Duty.

Pediatric patients aren't always a good fit for everyone. I felt incredibly nervous when I found out my first private duty patient was a baby! I knew I would be working with kids but I guess I thought my patient would be like school age or so. Nope! But in my case it has gone very well and I really enjoy it. I did use to babysit toddlers when I was younger. I don't consider myself naturally good with kids but I do like them and usually can get them to laugh or smile a bit. I'm actually quite introverted and quiet most of the time but I manage well.

I would say if you want to give it a try, go ahead and see if you like it. Hopefully in your area there are a lot of other jobs in case it isn't a good fit. But you may be surprised and find you like it.
