Domestic Violence By Threat 123 years ago

U.S.A. Ohio

Published

Hi there, I had a domestic violence by threat back in 1995 and it was expunged in 2005, I just went to my school informational session today and according to them if I was found guilty of a dv then I am disqualified to do the clinicals since I would be working with small children and elderly people. Does anyone know if I can write something or they look at it case by case, this was so long ago and I have even been licensed by the state medical board of Ohio in electrolysis in 2001. This dv is because of my ex boyfriend trying to kill me, this was in self defense but we both still got arrested. I have the federal background that came back in 2005 but it still shows it used to be on there but it is expunged. I talked to some lady at a health care place today and they would still allow someone to work there but would have to fill out additional paperwork. Is this going to stop me from my dream the rest of my life. I am sick to my stomach about it. The school lady told me to have my prints done and we would go from there. Does anyone know if I can still be a nurse because of that.

Thanks so much for your help

Check with the Ohio Board of Nursing about this issue. They should be able to properly and accurately advise you.

It may prevent you from working for certain employers -- or from attending clinicals at certain facilities. My hospital is very strict about that sort of thing, but they do consider individuals on a case by case basis.

thanks so much, I hope this doesn't prevent me from going after my dream.

My school says it is an automatic withdrawl from their clinicals, but what schools would have any clinicals I could do without having to work with the elderly and children.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that the state requires each nursing program to have every student successfully complete a certain number of both didactic and clinical hours in basic nursing education to include med-surg, geriatrics, pediatrics, and obstetrics. In all honesty, I don't see how you could escape this and still earn your degree, much less sit for the NCLEX. Also, once you obtain your license, most likely you'll be working with elderly in any setting, as the trend is for people to live longer. Know what I mean?

Reiterating the advice of other posters: Contact the OBN, they are the authority in these matters. Good luck.

Please, contact the Ohio Board of Nursing and get accurate information from the people who are in the best position to advise you. You may also want to contact an attorney to see if there is anything that can be done to amend your record in such a way that it would be acceptable to the BON and educational facilities.

Hope you are able to work things out.
