Hello!
I'm excited to begin this journey as i finally feel like i know what i want to do but i am confused about some things financially. Here's my situation.
I have a AS in Business. All of my classes were paid for under the BOGW. I was going to go back to community college to take my prerequisites before entering a CSU, however, wouldn't financial aid still cover my tuition because of my income? Or is it different because CSU's are much more expensive?
I'm in a position right now where I was just about to register for some classes at my local CC, but they denied me for a pell grant due to having used too many credits. They said if I went to another CC I may be able to if minimal credits were being transferred over. Just the necessary credits. I really need the grant, so im considering a drive slightly further to a different CC. But that brings me back to my question... why not just go to a csu if i qualify for it to be paid for? Is that even a thing? It will be easier for me to get in the nursing program if i take all the classes at CSU san marcos so i just want to know my options or what others have experienced with financial aid.
Thank you!

I would probably see if you can set up an appointment at CSU to ask them exactly how that might work for them. That or make an additional appointment with the financial aid advisor to better understand how they distribute financial aid.
Because I /believe/ they consider excessive hours based upon the program you are currently/last attending. Since you are not yet in a BSN program (and thus do not have that program added to the expected hours to complete your degree) and have already completed the program you were attending before (the AS), you are over the expected program hours for your AS. They aren't going to consider you as going toward a BSN until you actually get accepted into the program. Thus, I would imagine you'd have to pay for any prereq classes until you are in the BSN program. Once you get accepted, you will officially be in a bachelor's program and your expected credit hours to completion will be increased. They then might give you pell grants because you will no longer have "excessive hours."
But if you can kind of get around the system by not having all your credits transfer, I'm not sure. That would probably depend on the school and how the government keeps track of federal aid. I'm not sure if it's worth it to try.

I don't have an answer for you but I this interested me. Were you able to figure it out? I'm currently at a college I first wanted to go for my BSN but some of my friends said some hospitals here in tx pay for you to go back to get the bsn. However, reading and doing research I don't believe that is correct and you take your chances as some hospitals dont hire ADN's. so now I want to transfer to a university before getting any kind of associates degree because I believe you can't get Pell grants if you have an associates. However, I'm unsure if financial aid will cover to get my BSN with the university with out getting any loans out as I already have a lot of medical bills that I would like to pay once I have a decent job as a nurse.

My BSN program did not afford me financial aid that paid for everything however I was limited at every turn by the fact that I had previous education (in terms of a degree). At least that is what I was always told at the time. I would advise you to seek an appointment with the financial aid advisors at the CSU and have a details-laden discussion with them about your personal situation. If you think you are being handed a line, maybe you can talk to their supervisor. Don't walk away until you are satisfied that you have the complete facts that pertain to you, not just any generic student. (Looking back at the date of the OP, hope that this has been satisfactorily worked out by now).
